Tony Robson, Group CEO of Knauf Insulation, explained to Members of the European Parliament in Brussels, the importance of putting energy efficiency first in any new climate and energy package.

“Energy efficiency must be at the heart of any EU climate and energy package,” explained Tony Robson, Group CEO of Knauf Insulation. He continued, “offshoring billions of euros of hard earned money to pay for energy makes no sense when actions to save this energy will put the same money to work employing people in Europe, improving our competitiveness and helping our countries to pay off national debts”.

Speaking, today, at a breakfast briefing for senior Members of the European Parliament on behalf of the European Insulation Manufacturers Association (EURIMA), Robson made it clear that the only cost effective way to reach our climate targets is to ensure that energy efficiency is the central pillar of our climate and energy policy. And the only way to ensure that it is made a central pillar was to adopt a binding target for energy efficiency.

Sharing the platform, Ingrid Holmes of the UK based NGO E3G, said “Whether you believe in a high or low ambition for the 2030 package or a high or low carbon future there are no cheap energy options. Focusing our efforts on energy efficiency is not only the best way to achieve climate goals but euro for euro is the best way to stimulate the economy and get us back to growth. The benefits that also come from warm homes, cleaner air and a healthier population are the icing on the cake.”

As the European Union debates the best way to deliver a climate and energy package that makes economic sense and climate sense, the potential of energy efficiency must be realized.
