Industrial activities account for 27.6% of EU27's energy consumption and 1,202 million tons of CO2 emissions, according to the latest figures published by the European Environmental Agency. At global level, industry consumes approximately 26% of the world's energy and is responsible for about 50% of its CO2 emissions.

Contrary to residential construction, there are no mandatory standards for energy efficiency in industrial processes. Other than health and safety regulations, insulation decisions are primarily driven by specifications from engineering firms and the choices made by installers on the jobsite. In fact, the average insulation thickness in industry is still at the same level as 30 years ago, resulting in heat losses that can exceed 150 watts/m2 compared to less than 10 watts/m2 in residential constructions following current building codes.

Several reasons are commonly mentioned for this situation, including limited knowledge and awareness in industry about the economic benefits of better insulation. Such lack of understanding is astonishing ... and costly, since recent case-studies show payback periods as short as one year and less, even before the economic value of environmental and safety improvements is taken into account.

Knauf Insulation has joined the European Industrial Insulation Foundation (EIIF; www.insulationfoundation.eu) as Premium Member to help raise the profile of insulation as a method for enhancing sustainability and profitability. EiiF comprises Europe's leading insulation contractors and manufacturers. Its working program focuses on creating knowledge and awareness of industrial insulation via case-studies, conferences, training programs and continuous dialogue with European policy makers.
